Description

This vibrant cranberry orange sauce is the perfect balance of tart and sweet, bringing fresh, zesty flavor to holiday meals, breakfast dishes, or desserts. Made with fresh cranberries and real orange juice, it’s simple to prepare and far superior to store-bought versions. Its bright color and bold flavor make it a versatile addition to any table, from cozy family dinners to festive celebrations.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 ounces fresh cranberries

  • 1 cup granulated sugar (adjust to taste)

  • 1 cup freshly squeezed orange juice

  • Zest of 1 orange

  • 1/2 cup water

  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract (optional)

  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  • Prepare the Ingredients
Rinse the cranberries under cold water, discarding any soft or damaged berries. Zest the orange carefully to avoid the white pith, then juice the fruit.

  • Combine Liquids and Sugar
In a medium saucepan, combine the orange juice, water, and sugar. Stir over medium heat until the sugar dissolves completely.

  • Add Cranberries and Orange Zest
Stir in the cranberries and orange zest. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium-high heat, allowing the cranberries to pop.

  • Simmer Until Thickened
Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Mash some cranberries lightly if you prefer a smoother sauce.

  • Add Flavor Enhancements
Remove from heat and stir in a pinch of salt and vanilla extract if desired. Taste and adjust sweetness or acidity as needed.

  • Cool and Store
Let the sauce cool to room temperature before transferring to an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or freeze for up to 3 months.

Notes

he sauce thickens as it cools. For a smoother texture, mash or blend the cranberries partially. Adjust sugar based on the tartness of the cranberries.
