Ingredients
-
4 boneless, skinless chicken thighs (or chicken breasts if preferred)
-
3 tablespoons hoisin sauce
-
2 tablespoons soy sauce (low-sodium optional)
-
2 tablespoons honey
-
1 tablespoon brown sugar
-
1 teaspoon sesame oil
-
2 cloves garlic, minced
-
1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
-
1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder
-
½ teaspoon ground white pepper
-
1 teaspoon sriracha or chili paste (optional)
-
1 tablespoon rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar
-
2 green onions, sliced for garnish
-
Sesame seeds, for garnish
Instructions
-
In a medium bowl, whisk together hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, brown sugar, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, five-spice powder, white pepper, sriracha, and vinegar.
-
Place chicken in a ziplock bag or shallow dish and pour marinade over it. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight for best flavor.
-
Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking tray with foil and place a wire rack on top.
-
Arrange chicken on the wire rack, reserving leftover marinade. Roast for 25–30 minutes, basting with reserved marinade halfway through.
-
In the last 5 minutes, broil until the chicken develops a caramelized, slightly charred exterior. Watch closely to prevent burning.
-
Remove chicken and let rest for 5 minutes before slicing.
-
Garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds. Serve with rice, noodles, or vegetables.
Notes
-
Use thighs for juicier, more forgiving meat.
-
Adjust honey and sugar for desired sweetness.
-
Broil carefully to achieve a caramelized glaze.
-
Great served with rice, noodles, or stir-fried vegetables.
