Description

A comforting, hearty casserole made with tender potatoes, savory ground beef, and melted cheese—perfect for family dinners and make-ahead meals.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef

  • 1 ½ lb (680 g) potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced

  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 2 cups (200 g) shredded cheddar cheese

  • 1 cup (240 ml) milk

  • 1 cup (240 ml) beef broth

  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

  • 1 teaspoon paprika

  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch (23×33 cm) baking dish.

  • Heat olive oil in a skillet, sauté onion until soft, add garlic, then brown the ground beef.

  • Season the beef, stir in flour, then add beef broth and milk. Simmer until slightly thickened.

  • Layer half the potatoes in the dish, top with half the beef mixture and half the cheese.

  • Repeat layers and finish with cheese on top.

  • Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Uncover and bake 15–20 minutes until golden and tender.

  • Rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Slice potatoes evenly for best results. Allow the casserole to rest before serving for cleaner slices and better texture.
