Description

This Apple Crisp with Oatmeal Streusel is a cozy dessert perfect for any season, especially fall. With tender spiced apples topped with a golden, crunchy oatmeal streusel, it’s simple to prepare yet impressive enough for family gatherings or holiday meals. Serve it warm with vanilla ice cream or enjoy it plain for a comforting treat that feels timeless and homemade.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Apple Filling:

  • 6 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix), peeled, cored, and sliced

  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice

  • ½ cup granulated sugar

  • ¼ cup light brown sugar, packed

  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

For the Oatmeal Streusel Topping:

  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats

  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour

  • ¾ cup light brown sugar, packed

  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish or a deep pie dish.

  • In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour until evenly coated. Spread into the prepared baking dish.

  • In another bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add the cold, cubed butter and cut it into the mixture with a pastry cutter or your hands until it resembles coarse crumbs.

  • Sprinkle the streusel evenly over the apple mixture.

  • Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling at the edges.

  • Allow to cool for at least 10 minutes before serving. Enjoy warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, if desired.

Notes

  • A mix of tart and sweet apples provides the best flavor.

  • Keep the butter cold for a crumbly, crisp topping.

  • Add chopped pecans or walnuts to the streusel for extra crunch.

  • To make ahead, assemble the crisp, cover, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours before baking.

  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 4 days or frozen for 2 months.
